Curriculum Specialist, Technology Implementation and Reading/Literacy
Katie Shuman is a Curriculum Specialist at CenterPoint where she manages the early literacy initiative for District 19 in Brooklyn, New York. Katie works with the District 19 schools as they make a transition from a traditional, paper-based, whole-group instructional model to a blended learning model.
Katie began her career as a reading specialist where she taught differentiated literacy instruction to elementary and middle school students. She continued her career as a reading and literacy program manager at Literacy Trust where she provided professional development, training, and support in early literacy intervention to schools and individual literacy coaches across 14 districts in the New York City Department of Education. Most recently, Katie served as director of literacy at a Hebrew Public network elementary school where she oversaw the school’s literacy program.
Katie earned her master’s degree as a Reading Specialist from Teachers College, Columbia University and her honors bachelor’s degree in Childhood Education and English from the State University of New York College at Cortland. She was also a participant in the Princeton Alumni Corps Emerging Leaders Program, focused on non-profit management and leadership. Katie’s favorite teacher was her freshman history teacher, Ms. Connelly, whose sincere encouragement and belief in her abilities helped to inspire her pursuit of teaching.
